Boy Scout Troop 62
Boy Scout Troop 6255 Years in Douglas County
'Troup 62' was organized in 1927 by Scout Master, Sgt. Ostelle P. Pye, a soldier at Fort McPherson and a three person committee of local citizens from Sylvan Hills in the Fort McPherson area. The troop first met at the Sylvan Hills Improvement Club with eight scouts ranging in age from 12 to 14. The troop moved around the Atlanta area for the next 20 years with new sponsors every few years.
It was brought to Lithia Springs in 1949 by the Lithia Springs First Baptist Church and moved the following year to the Lithia Springs Civic Club. After two years with the Civic Club, they moved to Lithia Springs PTA in 1954, where they remained for ten years. In 1964, the troop moved to the Lithia Springs United Methodist Church sponsored by the Men's Bible Class. This year (2004) the troop celebrates its' 40th anniversary sponsored by the church and 55 years in Douglas County. In 1982, Jimmy Foreman reorganized the troop and the committee appointed Steve Malry as Scout Master with Bill Camp as the Assistant Scout Master, who became Scout Master in 1985. Bill Camp completes his 19th year this year (2004) as its' leader. Under his leadership the troop has remained strong and active. Over the years this troop has had some 23 Eagle Scouts and this year there were six candidates to qualify as Eagle Scouts, which is an outstanding record. We salute 'Troop 62' and the strong leadership both present and over the last 55 years. There have been many leaders from our church and from Douglas County who have kept the dream alive for hundreds of young men who have been a part of the troop.
