Promises,
Marvelous Promises!
I Christianity,
promises are what we get: promises, marvelous promises, and magnificent
promises.
For instance, our
Lord said to Peter (and to us), "On this rock I will build my church and the
powers of death shall not prevail against it". There was only the
pleasant sound of promise, the church will be defended and will survive on the
basis of God's promise. When the Son of God described His departure He did
not dictate regulations in a demanding attitude, He said, "Let not your heart
be troubled, neither let them be afraid." "Peace I leave with you; my
peace I give to you." That means that if you and I have peace it is
possessed as a result of God's great promises. It is procured because He
promised it. It is ours because he gave it.
Promises, promises,
promises that is all we Christians get. However, instead of spitting out
those words with so much fire that they smoke and sizzle, instead of letting
those words reflect furry and frustration, the confusion and criticism of our
negative attitudes, perhaps we should say slowly, "Promises, promises,
promises," Promises that are rich in God's grace and reveal it, promises
that are loaded with God's love and let us see it, promises that we packed with
the power of God to lift us in exciting expectation and to keep us there,
promises vibrating with the vitality of God's Spirit who helps us reach out with
all our being to be fulfilled. That is all we have. That is all we
need!

Just Like
Christ
The small city of
Bridgetown on the island of Barbados reflects the island's British heritage.
Bridgetown has a Trafalgar Square, just like London, and a Public Building clock
that reminds one on London's Big Ben.
Perhaps it was sentiment
that caused the people of Barbados to imitate on a smaller scale the great city
of London. It is more than sentiment that makes Christians want to be like
Christ. Our very name demands it. Our new life in Him requires it.
Of course, we can never be exactly like Him. Just as Bridgetown will never
be exactly like London. But just as the traveler to Barbados knows the
British have been there, so those who meet us can know that we have been with
Jesus.
Think about it!
